3% takes place in a dystopian world. Young people in a slum located in a desert can undergo a complex, sometimes inhuman selection test at the age of 20, in which the top 3 percent are given the chance to be admitted to a technically advanced location. The head of the futuristic test facility is the opaque Ezequiel, who does not shrink from torture and murder.

The series was inspired by a short film of the same name from 2011. It is the first Netflix series to be produced in Brazil.

In the meantime, 26 episodes have appeared in three seasons, with the third season being published in June 2019.

The series was not dubbed into German, it is only available in Portuguese, Spanish and English and with German subtitles.

At the age of 20, adolescents in a desert slum in a nearby futuristic facility can take a test that only 3% of participants are supposed to pass. They are given the opportunity to escape the poor conditions to a privileged island. The unprepared young people encounter sometimes inhuman tests. After individual interviews, the test subjects have to solve a three-dimensional puzzle in a short time. This test is passed by the subject Rafael by apparently stealing the result of another participant and this is thereby excluded. In the slum there is a kind of organized opposition to the test procedure and the society behind it, which has smuggled a spy into the test procedure. The heads of the facility learned of this operation and took two candidates, Michele and Bruna, aside for interrogation. Michele, who is the spy, persuades her friend Bruna to overcome the interrogator and steal her weapon. Bruna dies in the attempt, but Michele's suspicion falls away.

The remaining test persons get to know each other more and more and are brought together in groups. In the next test you have to interpret a scene recreated with dolls and find out the reason for the suffocation of one woman. Fernando, a test person in a wheelchair, presents his solution, shortly before the group wants to submit it, Rafael proves that it is wrong and helps the group to victory with his version. Another test is the democratic selection of a group member who should then be excluded. Joana only gets ahead with this task thanks to a deception, although the people in charge notice this.

The selection test continues and requires the teenagers to walk down a dark corridor where a gas hallucinates and confronts them with their worst fear. Several flashbacks show that shortly before the start of this year's expulsion process, Joana accidentally killed the son of a criminal gang leader and is now on the run with an illegally used identity. Meanwhile, Ezequiel, the head of the proceedings, receives a visit from a small boy who lives in the slum, whom he has apparently already illegally visited several times and with whom he has a good relationship. Aline, an employee, is slowly getting on the track of what he is doing, but cannot provide any clear evidence.

The graduates are locked in a kind of storage area and have to coordinate completely to get food and drinks. A boy named Marco, who repeatedly indicates that everyone in his family has successfully passed the test and has come to the island, takes on the leadership role and coordinates the team. After initial successes, the situation escalates quickly and disputes arise among each other. The trigger for this is a revolt led by Marco, with the aim of stealing the heavily rationed supplies from the other participants and suppressing them with violence. Nor does it stop when the first death occurs. Meanwhile, Joana manages to escape, but after a conversation with Ezequiel she returns, frees the oppressed and overpowers Marco's group. Several test persons die, apparently also Marco. Rafael has admitted his belonging to 'the cause', as the opposition group is called, to Michele in order to save his life. Only 9% of the candidates make it into the gardens of the test complex after completing the test.

In a flashback, Ezequiel's past is discussed. He has been leading the test procedure for several years, in the second year there was a military operation on the group of opposition fighters in the slum, which he and his wife Julia followed via video transmission. During the operation, a man is killed and a child is briefly shown who appears to be alone in the house. Julia recognizes her son, whom she had to leave behind for the test and who had previously been kept secret. This event arouses in her the desire to visit her son against the law. Ezequiel thwarts her attempt to escape the procedure building, whereupon she is put in a clinical institution. In this she takes her own life as the first resident of the island. Despite what happened, Ezequiel decides to continue the process, and he also makes contact with the boy for the first time.

The candidates are all given a choice brought to them by a close relative. Either they go back to the mainland with their family with a large amount of money or they stay in the process. Then everyone receives a personalized task. Rafael can only create this by initiating and blackmailing Fernando into his belonging to 'the cause'. Michele, on the other hand, is painfully reminded of her brother's death during the trial a few years ago while doing her job. In response, she uses a piece of glass to cut a scar above her hip and remove a small, metal capsule. Fernando and Joana also pass these two tasks.

With the help of the poison in the capsule, Michele poisons Ezequiel's glass in order to avenge her brother's death in the process of elimination five years ago. However, the glasses are swapped and César, an employee of the test staff, dies. Thereupon Ezequiel starts with individual questioning of the test persons, but shifts the responsibility for the murder to Aline with the help of falsified evidence and a falsified testimony. Aline was after the head of proceedings and wanted to produce evidence of Ezequiel's illegal activities. It also becomes clear that he is aware that the attack was aimed at him and was carried out by Michele.

Ezequiel has the candidate Michele tortured to find the leader of the "cause". The rebel group of the "thing" learns that allegedly two of its members have successfully passed the test. Candidates undergo the final cleaning process, during which they are also sterilized . Rafael in particular reacts in shock to this approach. Joana is subjected to one last test in which she is supposed to kill a criminal from the mainland. However, she refuses and leaves the building. She returns to the slum with Fernando. In the end, the candidates are brought to the island together with Michele and Alina.

The action begins shortly before the 105th selection test. On the one hand, life on the island is shown as a utopia in which everything is perfectly and technically monitored, but apparently only preserves this as an appearance to the outside world. Michele has left the rehabilitation center behind, but still has problems integrating into life that is alien to her. Her brother lives alone in a mirrored cell as a murderer convicted without evidence. In order to free him, she lets herself be carried away at Ezequiel's request to develop a test for the selection process and to help him with this. On the other hand, it is shown how Joana is about to join the cause on the mainland. She was initially refused admission due to unfriendly behavior. She can give the leader Silas explosive chemicals, which makes her a member. With the help of this he would like to carry out an assassination attempt during the selection process in which many innocent people would die, as the founder of the cause had planned. This does not go unnoticed by the inhabitants of the island, who want to regulate the conditions on the mainland with military force. Michele accompanies Ezequiel to the selection process and learns that it should be her job to infiltrate the matter.

While Michele has decided to stop working for the cause because she met her brother on the island and wants to help him, Rafael desperately tries to build a radio to contact the cause on the mainland. He gets into Elisa, a doctor, at a party and starts a relationship with her. She owns an older toaster, which gives him the missing part for his radio. When trying to contact the matter, Elisa explains that radio waves are being disturbed on the island. To inform the matter of Michele's change in attitude, he takes a test to qualify him for the military unit. He exists and accompanies Elisa and his superior Marcela to the mainland. Meanwhile, Fernando is training the future participants in the selection process there. One evening Joana stands before him, who tells him about the plans of the matter to detonate a bomb during Ezequiel's speech. The only way to avoid the plan is to develop and present a better plan.

The preparations for the next procedure, which is imminent, are ongoing on the various pages. Michele is prepared by Ezequiel to defuse the bomb and thus prevent the assassination attempt. To do this, she contacts the matter via radio and provides an encrypted place and time for a meeting. In the matter, however, there is a dispute between Ivana and Silas, whether it is a trap. The majority sticks to the plan, Michele is even supposed to be eliminated as a suspected traitor. Joana, on the other hand, decrypts the message with the help of Fernando, who then meets Michele. Rafael also makes it to the mainland as a member of the military unit and flees to warn the cause of Michele's collaboration with Ezequiel. He meets Joana and Ivana and tries to explain to them that he is still on their side. Michele and Fernando flee from Silas, who wants to kill them, and also meet the others. Silas takes turns aiming her gun at Michele and Rafael, while Ezequiel overhears everything and can identify Rafael's voice.

On the mainland, Michele and Rafael are interrogated by Joana and Ivana using various methods to find out which of the two has stayed true to the cause. Meanwhile, Ezequiel overhears everything about Michele and gives her advice on how to survive the interrogation, but also tries to manipulate her for his side. The methods lead to no result, in the end Ivana is convinced that Michele is the traitor, but has no clear evidence. In her senior position, she wants to disregard Joana and kill Michele. Meanwhile, Rafael's superiors manage to determine his position and she plans to storm the building with a military force. Michele knows from this that she wants to use this trump card to betray Ezequiel and prove her loyalty to the cause. To keep her from doing so, Ezequiel connects her with her brother, who is in prison on the island and with whom she has not yet been able to talk due to the security conditions. When the soldiers storm, Ivana convinces Rafael to kill them so that from the soldiers' point of view it looks as if he has remained loyal to the island and as if he could overwhelm it with violence and ultimately kill it. With the help of a tip from Ezequiel, Michele and Joana manage to escape. Joana is now convinced that Michele has stayed true to the cause.

After the escape, Michele tries to outsmart Ezequiel by only communicating with Joana in writing and no longer verbally. However, there is an argument when Silas arrives. He still doesn't trust Michel and wants to kill her. The tense situation takes a turn when Ezequiel unexpectedly shows up. He reveals to the group that his loyalty still belongs to the cause and that he has lived as a mole on the island for many years. His plan from the beginning was to destroy it from within. His dormant ambition was reawakened by the suicide of his wife. The plan to build the bomb and carry out the assassination attempt in the forthcoming trial also came from him. He has replaced the founder's letter with a new one. When he wants to flee back to the procedure building with Michele, the head of security Marcela stands in their way. She could hear the conversation on Michele. She lets Michele escape and murders Ezequiel with a knife. Then she draws the mark of the cause on his chest with blood and hangs his body in the slum. As a result, none of the islanders learn of his wrong game, the murder is attached to the matter and the trial should go ahead as planned.

The soldiers around Rafael and Marcela begin to question people on the mainland about Ezequiel's death and the cause. For a hint, they promise advantages in the selection process, which should start in a few days. In the meantime, Fernando manages to steal a radio from the registration team with which he can speak to all the mainland residents at the same time. He reveals to them that the last test consists of the so-called cleaning and thus of the sterilization of all participants and hopes to dissuade as many as possible from taking part in the test procedure. Thereupon he is wanted by the soldiers of the island. Glória, a childhood friend of Fernando, does not have the heart to tell the agent about his collaboration with the cause or his stay, and even helps him to escape. She still feels guilty that he is only sitting in a wheelchair because she did not warn him of a loose rock during a climbing game that she forced on him and he fell as a result. Shortly afterwards he is seized and led away by soldiers, including Rafael. However, he manages to smuggle a radio into his prison. In the meantime, Michel and Joana manage to steal the bomb from Silas' hiding place. Michel flees back to the procedure building alone, with the bomb she proves that it does not belong to the cause and has remained loyal to the island. Joana, however, is kidnapped during the night by supporters of the criminal militia. She had murdered her leader's son a year ago.

Michele is brought back to the island, where her memory of the cause and Ezequiel are to be brainwashed. However, she manages to outsmart and overpower her interrogator, Cássia. She steals her gun and frees her brother from the glass prison with it. They flee together. In the meantime, Joana manages to loosen her shackles, while escaping she meets Marco, who was believed to be dead. Rafael visits Fernando in prison. He learns of his plan to delete all registration data for the procedure and thus stop it. On his next shift in the slum, where he guards the registration station, where his girlfriend Elisa also works as a doctor, he would like to receive information from her. There is an argument. Suddenly, an assassin sent by Ivana appears. While trying to kill Rafael, he shoots Elisa and is shot by Rafael. Elisa survives, but has to be brought back to the island. Rafael stays on the mainland and learns from Fernando that Joana is in danger.

Marco survived the incidents during the proceedings, severely injured. Both of his legs were amputated and replaced with prostheses; he can only move with difficulty with a crutch. In his distress he decides to join the militia who are planning to publicly kill Joana, who is under their control. However, Marco helps her escape. When the leader Gerson asks him about it, Marco kills him with a blade hidden in his crutch and takes over the leadership of the militia. First, he contacts Marcela, who is his mother. There comes a meeting at which he makes her the proposal to prevent attempts to manipulate the matter, in exchange he would like to get another chance in the upcoming proceedings. His mother remains very cool and dismissive and does not give him a clear answer for the time being. In the meantime, Joana fled to a hiding place where the matter was hiding and met Silas, who sold her to the militia. When Rafael shows up, a fight breaks out. Joana and Silas fall into a pit full of poisonous frogs. Rafael saves Joana while Silas dies of the burns in the pit. Meanwhile, Michele and her brother are still fleeing so as not to be followed, they cut out their registration chips. Her brother André remembers the location and the code of a bunker that the founding trio created and into which they flee. Apart from him, no living person knows of the hiding place.

The bunker in which Michele and André are hiding served the founding trio as a communication center with the inland. There you will find video footage and information about the founding of the island. 107 years ago the trio was in the process of building the island as a perfect place for humanity, while inland all raw materials were being exploited. The island was financed by a wealthy upper class. When the situation on the mainland threatens to escalate and civil war is about to break out, the group of investors, represented by the father of one of the founders, decides to colonize the island prematurely and make it accessible only to themselves and the other investors. The trio is appalled by this idea and wants to resist. Their plan is to permanently paralyze the power supply on the mainland, which would also mean a collapse of the banks and the digital currency and thus a disempowerment of investors. However, since this would also mean a drastic deterioration in living conditions as well as collateral damage and deaths (for example in hospitals), there is a dispute within the group, which ends with the murder of one of the members. The remaining two carry out the plan, later found the island according to their ideas and are henceforth revered as the perfect founding couple. André and his mentor found out this information over a year ago. His mentor wanted to bring this information to the public and thus fundamentally shake the image of the island. André, already blinded by the island's ideology, wants to prevent this and kills his mentor. Michele is also of the opinion that this information must not be concealed and flees with the collar of the murdered founder. In the meantime, Joana, Rafael and Fernando start implementing their plan to delete the registration data for the upcoming procedure and split up for it. Joana was smuggled into the process building in a refrigerator and Fernando was able to free himself from his prison with the help of a ring that Rafael slipped him. Rafael goes to the island. Marco and his militia are stationed in the procedure building to ensure security.

Fernando succeeds in switching off the power supply for the monitoring system in the process building, which allows Joana to move unnoticed. She makes it to the room where the registration data is stored, but she lacks the authority to open the door. Shortly afterwards she has to flee from Marco and his people into a constantly changing labyrinth. There she manages to first outrun her pursuers and later overwhelm Marco. Out of necessity, Fernando goes to the room and is able to open the door with his ring. The data are stored in a shell, which is in a liquid at −52 ° C. He is unable to remove them, but he finds that blood contamination damages memory. He cuts a wound in his hand and drips the container full with it until the data is unusable. Due to the great blood loss, however, he loses consciousness. On the island, Rafael faces a problem similar to Joana. He should delete the copy of the registration data, but also has no access to the room. Michele comes to his aid, opens the room, but then knocks him out. It deletes the data, but first saves a copy on a portable device. Since the procedure cannot begin without the data, participants become impatient and aggressive. They force their way into the building, and there is fighting between them and the security personnel. Marcela can calm the crowd down again and put them off until the evening. Joana uses the general confusion to get herself and Fernando out of the building unnoticed. Meanwhile, Michele submits an exchange deal to the board. It gives them the data to enable the procedure to be carried out, and in exchange the mainland is supplied with seeds, fertilizers and other relief supplies. Shortly before there was another uprising by the participants in the process building, the chairwoman of the board, Nair, announced that the process was taking place as planned. Joana and Fernando are dejected because their plan, which cost them a lot, ultimately failed. Michele is able to convince Fernando, however, that a new start in an area called the mussel means more and helps in the long term than simply missing out on the procedure.

The eight-part first season was published worldwide on November 25, 2016 on the video-on-demand platform Netflix , the second season was published on April 27, 2018 with ten episodes. The third season was released on June 7, 2019 on Netflix with eight episodes.

reception

The pilot episode was compared on Serienjunkies.de with the dystopian anthology series Black Mirror and was worth five out of five stars by reviewer Mario Giglio. The criticism of the entire first season of 3% awarded 4.5 out of 5 stars, whereby the “dense story”, “memorable characters” and an “artistic staging” with a relatively low budget were praised.
