On Broadway there is a music album by Götz Alsmann that was released in 2014. It mainly contains classics from the Great American Songbook , all of which he sings in German.

History of origin

The album forms the second part of a trilogy of musical journeys. This idea goes back to the planning by Philippe König from the record company Blue Note Records , where Götz Alsmann's albums have also been released since 2007. A first trip was to Paris. Alsmann must have wondered what could follow after Paris. He decided to travel to New York, directly to Broadway , the supposed incubator for classic jazz hits.

On his Broadway album, Alsmann commemorates the great stars of Broadway history. Whether George Gershwin , Cole Porter or Jerome Kern - Alsmann breathes new life into them together with his quartet. The best-known performers included world stars like Frank Sinatra , Ella Fitzgerald , Peggy Lee , Sammy Davis, Jr. , Mel Tormé , but also pop greats like Elvis Presley and the Beatles .

The focus of the artistic reinterpretation are evergreens , which became known and famous between the 1930s and 1950s through musicals, films and revues and are now part of the Great American Songbook . In the early summer of 2014, Alsmann and his band traveled to New York to record the album, where the album was recorded in the Sear Sound Studio , the oldest recording studio in the US metropolis. Alsmann sang all 18 Broadway classics on the new album in German.

For the German texts, Alsmann mainly used forgotten texts that are being interpreted again for the first time in decades. “The Germanization of the American classics often provides amusement. For example, when the good old Blue Moon finds itself in a "moonlit night by the sea" on the Italian Gulf of Taranto. "
