That Old Black Magic

That Old Black Magic is a composition by Harold Arlen , with the text of Johnny Mercer , which for the musical film Star Spangled Rhythm was sung was written (1942) of the song by Johnny Johnston. That Old Black Magic received an Oscar nomination in 1944 in the " Best Song " category .

The song is written as a rondo in the form A1 - B - A2 - C - D - E - A3 - F.

It became a much-played pop and jazz standard in the US after its release - popularized by swing versions of Glenn Miller / Skip Nelson or Margaret Whiting (with the Freddie Slack Orchestra) in 1943. In 1948, Billy Daniels landed the song a big hit. Recordings by Frank Sinatra , Sammy Davis , Charlie Barnet , Judy Garland , Fred Waring as well as the use in other films contributed to the spread of the song. Louis Prima and his wife Keely Smith recorded the title in 1958 and were awarded a Grammy for their duet the following year .

In the 1980s, the song was used as background music in the Hollywood film Star Trek III: In Search of Mr. Spock . It is used in two episodes of the Star Trek: Raumschiff Voyager series : Seven of Nine sings it in one ; in the other he is picked up by the doctor and Ensign Harry Kim .

Keith Jarrett recorded the song with his standards trio .
