31-35 School Street (Port Ellen)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

At 31-35 School Street is a group of five residential buildings in the Scottish town of Port Ellen on the Hebridean island of Islay . The buildings are located near the port on the Rubha Glas headland . On August 28, 1980, the houses as a whole were included in the Scottish list of monuments in category C.

description

The building group is built in a closed construction . It stretches 50 m along School Street . The coastline runs along the opposite side of the street, which is why there are no buildings there. The closed front points in a north-westerly direction over the bay of Port Ellen directly to the Port Ellen whiskey distillery, which is also listed . The houses are built in the typical local style of the early 19th century. They each have an upper floor and close with slate-covered gable roofs . Typical for the region, the facades are plastered with Harl . In September 2010, an application was granted to replace the highland slate shingles in house number 33 with Spanish slate shingles.
