38-44 High Street (Linlithgow)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Under the address High Street 38-44 in the Scottish town of Linlithgow in the Council Area West Lothian has four residential buildings. In 1971 they were included as an ensemble in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

Together with the neighboring houses 46-48 High Street , which are independently classified as a monument , the row of buildings is referred to as Hamilton's Land . This is due to the family branch of the Hamiltons of Pardovan and Humbie , whose members had the houses built in the early 17th century. In 1958 the buildings were restored.

description

The buildings are on High Street, one of the main thoroughfares in the east of Linlithgow, not far from Linlithgow Palace . The three-story houses are three axes wide. The masonry consists of rubble from the cream-colored sandstone , which was roughly built into a layered masonry . Shops are set up on the ground floor, while the upper floors are available as living spaces. The south-facing fronts are traditionally designed. The chimneys protrude from the gable roofs . The bezels that surround the building openings are made of ashlar and protrude slightly. This suggests that the facades used to be plastered with Harl . A segment arch portal leads into the interior of the building.
