46-48 High Street (Linlithgow)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Under the address High Street 46-48 in the Scottish town of Linlithgow in the unitary authority West Lothian are two residential buildings. In 1971 they were included as an ensemble in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

Together with the neighboring houses 38-44 High Street , which are independently classified as a monument , the row of buildings is referred to as Hamilton's Land . This is due to the family branch of the Hamiltons of Pardovan and Humbie , whose members had the houses built in the early 17th century. In 1958 the buildings were restored.

description

The buildings are on High Street, one of the main thoroughfares in the east of Linlithgow, not far from Linlithgow Palace . The two three-story houses are not constructed identically, with the left two and the right three axes wide. The masonry consists of rubble from the cream-colored sandstone , which was roughly built into a layered masonry . Shops are set up on the ground floor, while the upper floors are available as living spaces. The traditionally designed, south-facing fronts with twelve-part lattice windows have stepped gables and gable-end chimneys. Fins made of ashlar frame the building openings. On the right a segment arch portal leads into the interior of the building. A two-story north wing adjoins the rear of the building. A bread oven from the 16th century can be found in the back yard.
