386BSD (also JOLIX ) is a free Unix - Operating system by Bill and Lynne Jolitz and was the first free system from the BSD family. In addition, 386BSD was the foundation for FreeBSD , OpenBSD, and NetBSD .

history

The beginnings of 386BSD go back to 1989 as a port from 4.3BSD or 4.3BSD NET / 2 to the Intel 386er . It had a few enhancements that, in the eyes of the authors, made it possible to use it without an AT&T UNIX source license, making it the first free BSD system. In 1991 Bill Jolitz worked for Berkeley Software Design, Inc. (BSDi), which also ported 4.3BSD Net / 2 to x86 . This resulted in the BSD / 386 operating system, the predecessor of BSD / OS , between 1991 and 1992 . But this had little in common with 386BSD , since Jolitz destroyed his work for BSDi before he left the group.

The first official versions 386BSD 0.0 and 386BSD 0.1 were released in March and July 1992. Although the system was very popular, it was of limited use at the time. Therefore, a patch collection (a so-called patch kit) was developed, which fixed errors and expanded the system. The last version of the patch kit was version 0.2.4 from June 1993. Between versions 0.0 and 0.1, the patches were still included in the system. However, since the patches only flowed very slowly or not at all into new versions of 386BSD after version 0.1, FreeBSD and NetBSD finally emerged from 386BSD in 1993 .

In the course of the copyright dispute between BSDi and Novell , parts of 386BSD were also classified as encumbered in the same year . In contrast to FreeBSD and NetBSD , however, it was never converted to 4.4BSD-lite and the 386BSD distributions were removed from the FTP servers as a precaution .

The completed version 386BSD 1.0 was published in November 1994 as the 386BSD Reference CD-ROM by Dr. Dobb's Journal published, but never offered as a download version. At that time, however, further developed versions of NetBSD and FreeBSD already existed , so that interest in 386BSD declined. Also by Dr. Dobb's Journal was finally released an update to the last public version 386BSD 2.0 in 1995 in the form of an update disk.
