4DOS is a command line interpreter of the company JP software which the supplied, functionally poorer interpreter of PC-compatible DOS as COMMAND.COM from MS-DOS replaced. Originally sold as shareware , version 7.50 of 4DOS was released under a modified MIT license as an open source program without any support from the manufacturer. From 2006 to 2009 this software was further developed by Lachesar Georgiev ( Bulgarian Лъчезар Георгиев , transliteration Luchezar Georgiev ).
Compatible developments
Largely compatible developments for other operating systems are 4OS2 (meanwhile also open source) for OS / 2 as well as 4NT and Take Command for Windows NT ( proprietary ), which were also developed by JP Software. Only Take Command is still sold by JP Software.
The Norton Utilities included NDOS, a version 4 based license version of 4DOS. This was completely localized for the German market.
advantages
4DOS offers a number of advantages over the usual command line interpreter:
- about 60 additional commands
- extended functions for existing commands
- extended structures for programming batch processing (see also → scripting language )
- extensive editing the command line with the history storage ( English "History" ), rapid change directory etc.
- extended options for color design in the command line, commands and display
- More than 60 internal environment variables and 90 functions for manipulating and displaying system information, strings, numbers, date and time values, file information
