- Wen von Jin , ruler of the Chinese sub-empire Jin and one of the five hegemons at the time of the spring and autumn annals , defeated the rival state of Chu together with the states of Qi and Qin in the battle of Chengpu .
- The noble Kylon , Olympic champion of the year 640 BC BC , makes a fruitless attempt to overthrow Athens . After fierce resistance, he and his supporters have to retreat to the Temple of Athena on the Acropolis . This is then stormed by supporters of the archon Megakles , and Kylon's supporters stoned. Megakles dynasty of the Alkmaionids had to go into exile because of a violation of the right of asylum.
