The row of buildings was built in the course of the city's modernization in 1871. The city architect William Mackison is responsible for the design . The row of buildings is on Commercial Street in the center of Dundee. It takes up the entire section between High Street and Albert Square with the McManus Galleries . The listed building 77-80 High Street adjoins on the west side. The east-facing main facade is 38 axes wide, which are arranged in the scheme 5–7–7–7–7–5. With the exception of later changes, it is structured symmetrically. The masonry of the four-story building consists of sandstone blocks .

Shops with shop windows are set up on the ground floor. The masonry on the first floor is rusticated . There, alternating triangular and segmented arched gables crown the windows. The windows on the second floor close with round arches with keystones resting on columns with composite capitals . On the central axes of the seven-axis-wide facades, balconies rest on ornamented consoles . Above, a cornice divides the facade horizontally. The final roofs are covered with slate.
