There is a commercial building at 77-80 High Street in the Scottish city ​​of Dundee in the council area of the same name . In 1965 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The row of buildings was built in the course of the city's modernization in 1871. The city architect William Mackison is responsible for the design . House number 77 was built a little later and has a simpler design. Brown's department store opened in the building complex in 1888 and occupied it entirely by 1914. A tea house was set up in 1900 and the interior and the shop window fronts were modernized in 1908 and in the course of the 1930s. In the 2000s, large parts of the building were demolished for development. The listed facades were retained.

The row of buildings extends along Murraygate in Dundee city center. The Murraygate runs out into the High Street . The listed ensemble 68–110 Commercial Street adjoins the north side, while the continuation on the west side is listed as 74–76 High Street .

The street-side main facade is 23 axes wide, which are arranged in the scheme 2–3–7–7–3–1. The masonry of the four-story building consists of sandstone blocks . Shops with shop windows are set up on the ground floor. The masonry on the first floor is rusticated . There pilasters structure the facade according to the building sections. The windows on the first floor are alternately crowned by triangular and segmented arched gables . The windows on the second floor close with round arches with keystones resting on columns with composite capitals . On the central axes of the seven-axis-wide facades, balconies rest on ornamented consoles . Above, a cornice on brackets divides the facade horizontally. The elongated windows on the top floor are made with keystones. The final roofs are covered with slate.
