Arthur Daniel O'Neal (born May 15, 1936 in Bremerton , Washington ; died October 10, 2017 in Seattle ) was an American government official and manager.

Life

A. Daniel O'Neal graduated from Whitman College and received his BA in Mathematics in 1959 . After graduating from the Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island , O'Neal served four years (1959–1963) as a technical officer on a destroyer during the Vietnam War. In 1965 he graduated from the University of Washington Law School .

In 1966, O'Neal began a consultancy with the US Senate Committee on Economics . He was then from 1967 to 1969 adviser to the Democratic Senator of Washington State Warren G. Magnuson , who was followed by an advisory role at the US Senate for the subcommittee on "Surface Transportation" until 1973. During this time he was involved, among other things, in the legislation for the establishment of the long- distance passenger transport company Amtrak . On April 12, 1973, he was the successor to Rodolfo Montejano member of the regulatory authority Interstate Commerce Commission . From April 5, 1977 to December 31, 1979 he was then head of this regulatory authority. During this time he was also a member of the board of directors of the United States Railway Association , the organizational mother of the Conrail freight company . During his tenure, he reformed the internal organization of the Interstate Commerce Commission and promoted deregulation, especially in freight road transport. His vacant seat was deleted from January 1, 1983.

In 1980, Daniel O'Neal joined the law firm Garvey, Schubert, Adams and Barer. He came into contact with The Greenbrier Companies and took a seat on the supervisory board of the subsidiary Gunderson Inc. (1985-2005). In 1984 he also became Chairman of the Board of Directors of Greenbrier Intermodal. He held this position until 1994, but inactive from 1989, as he took over the transport logistics company that year after the death of the owner and friend of A. Daniel O'Neal Fred H. Tolan and operated it until 1996 as Tolan O'Neal Transportation & Logistics Inc headed. In 1996 the company was fully taken over by Greenbrier and integrated into the newly founded company Greenbrier Logistics Inc., whose supervisory board chairman O'Neal was until 1997. In 1994 he received a seat on the board of directors of The Greenbrier Companies. Daniel O'Neal was also chairman of the board of directors of the Greenbrier subsidiary Autostack Corporation from 1989 to 1996. From 1998 to 2011 he was directly employed by Greenbrier as a consultant and lobbyist. Since then he has been working freelance in this field. He gave up his seat on the board of directors at Greenbrier in January 2016.

In 2003 he was appointed to the Washington State Transportation Commission by Governor Gary Locke . In 2009 he was appointed by his successor Christine Gregoire for a further term until 2015.

In 1961 he married Diane Reedy. He had four children with her.
