The Greenbrier Companies is an American manufacturer of freight cars . Greenbrier has four manufacturing plants in North America, one in Portland, Oregon and three in Mexico ( Monclova , Sahagún and Tlaxcala ). The European market is supplied, among others, by the Polish subsidiary Wagony Świdnica from Schweidnitz (Świdnica).

Together with Watco Companies , Greenbrier operates the GBW Railcar Services repair company as a joint venture . The company also leases a fleet of tens of thousands of wagons.

history

Greenbrier goes back to the Gunderson Corporation. This was founded in 1919 as Wire Wheel Sales and Service . The company later renamed itself Gunderson Brothers Engineering Corporation and built, among other things, steel frames and sawmills. Car transporters were also made later. During World War II, Gunderson built lifeboats, landing craft and trailers for the US Navy. After the Second World War, Gunderson developed into a shipyard for larger ships. Gunderson built e.g. B. the research vessel FLoating Instrument Platform (RP FLIP). In 1958, frames for railroad cars were welded for the first time. In the next few years, freight wagons were also added.

In 1965 the Gunderson brothers sold their company to FMC Corporation . There the location was named Marine and Rail Equipment Division (MRED) in 1973 . In 1979, 6,027 freight cars were produced. After that, production figures fell to a low.

In 1981 James Furman bought the Greenbrier Leasing Corporation, which in 1985 took over the former Gunderson location from the FMC Corporation. In 1986 the production of twin-stack double-deck container wagons began . These became Greenbrier's most important product, with an annual production of around 3,000 units in 1990. Greenbrier is the market leader for them today.

In 2015 Wagony Świdnica and PKP Cargo committed to open another production line for freight wagons in Szczecin .

Greenbrier in Europe

In 2018, Greenbrier generated sales of USD 136.8 million in Europe. Production sites are located in the Romanian towns of Arat , Caracal and Drobeta Turnu Severin , as well as in Świdnica in Poland .
