Life

Matthews began his stage career in 1887 at London's Princess's Theater and on vaudeville stages and initially filled the field of adolescent lover. This was followed by engagements on West End pieces in London and on tours that took him to South Africa , Australia , the USA and Paris from the 1890s .

Matthews celebrated success especially with comic roles, one of his greatest successes was Charley's aunt . In later years he was seen several times with gentleman parts in tabloids. He first found employment in film in the 1910s, but regularly only from 1940. There Matty, as he was known in the industry, embodied mostly weird types and aristocrats. He played almost exclusively in comedies and became one of the most popular "old men" in British cinema after World War II. Matthews continued to work as an actor until his death at the age of 90. In 1958, an episode of the British television show This Is Your Life was dedicated to him, which rolled out his life story. The next day the British newspapers extolled the episode as well as Matthews' humor.

AE Matthews was Chairman of the British Film Actors Company from 1916 to 1918. In 1951 he received the Order of the British Empire .
