A. den Doolaard was the pseudonym of the Dutch writer Cornelis Johannes George (Bob) Spoelstra Jr. (born February 7, 1901 in Zwolle , † June 26, 1994 in Hoenderloo ).

biography

Den Doolaard went to school in The Hague . After the death of his father, he worked from 1920 to 1928 as an accountant at the Bataafse Petroleum Maatschappij. In 1926 he made his debut with De Lauffde betonwerker , a volume of vitalistic poems. In 1928 he traveled through France and the Balkans , where he did various odd jobs. He processed his experiences in stories and newspaper articles. During the Second World War , the Doolaard lived in the United Kingdom and worked as a news anchor for De Brandaris and Radio Oranje . After the war the Doolaard returned to the Netherlands. From 1954 he lived in Hoenderloo.

Recognition in North Macedonia

In his books Orient Express and The Wedding of the Seven Gypsies (1956) the Doolaard showed an extraordinary interest in North Macedonia. For decades, the Dutch have therefore been one of the most frequent tourists in North Macedonia. In 2006 the Doolaard got a monument in Ohrid .
