A3! ( jap. エ ー ス リ ー , Ēsurī , short for "Act! Addict! Actors!") is a Japanese mobile game from Liber Entertainment from 2017. The game was adapted in the form of several theater plays, and in 2020 an anime television series for the game was released .

The Mankai Company is a small theater in an entertainment district that used to be very successful. However, many years after the disappearance of its former leader, it faces ruin and is heavily in debt. In a final attempt to save the theater, five new, as yet inexperienced actors are recruited. They are supposed to form the new spring troupe - the theater performances are traditionally divided into four seasonal groups. First came the acting enthusiast Sakuya Sakuma ( 佐 久 間 咲 也 ), who was not accepted at any other theater, but who absolutely wants to be on stage. Together with him, Tsuzuru Minagi ( 皆 木 綴 ), who also writes pieces, is recruited in the pedestrian zone , as well as Masumi Usui ( 碓 氷 真澄 ), Itaru Chigasaki ( 茅 ヶ 崎 至 ) and the mysterious foreigner Citron. You have to be the first group after the restart of the theater and practice your untrained acting skills in just two months before the start of the play. If the play is not a success, the theater will be demolished.
Game mechanics
In A3! the player accompanies the four groups of actors one after the other in the role of director. In interactions with each of the five members, he has to guide them and help them to master the challenges of the coming piece and in the human interaction in the group. He has to do this successfully enough to save the theater from ruin and to be able to service the debt after a year in which the four groups have played.
Creation and publication
The game was produced by Liber Entertainment . The character design was created by Ryō Fujiwara . Well-known idols such as Masayoshi Ōishi , Yuki Kimura , Hige Driver , RON, Asuka Oda , Ryōta Suemasu , Takeyuki Tonegawa , Katsutoshi Kitagawa , Yuyoyuppe and Reiji Okii were involved as speakers and music .
The game was released on January 27, 2017 by Liber Entertainment for iOS and Android as free-to-play . It was quickly successful, reaching 2 million downloads in one month. The music CD for the game, published by Pony Canyon , also reached first place in the Japanese charts during this time and stayed in the charts for several weeks. An English version of the game was released by Cybird on October 29, 2019.
Stage plays and radio broadcast
Since 2018, a series of plays under the title Mankai Stage A3! listed. It started with Mankai Stage A3! Spring & Summer 2018 in June 2018, which has since been shown repeatedly in Tokyo and Kyoto. In January 2019, Mankai Stage A3 came! Autumn & Winter 2019 to that it was also shown in Osaka. This was followed by two new pieces with the groups Spring and Summer .
The actors in the plays also started a radio broadcast on Nippon Broadcasting System in October 2018 .
Anime series
An adaptation of the game as an anime series for Japanese television was created at the studios PA Works and Studio 3Hz . Directed by Keisuke Shinohara and lead author was Naoki Hayashi . The character design comes from Mariko Komatsu and the artistic direction was Hiroko Tanabe . Production had to be interrupted in January due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
The series started on January 13, 2020 on Tokyo MX . At the same time, international publication began with subtitles via streaming platforms, including on Wakanim with German subtitles as well as French, Russian and English. The broadcast was canceled after episode 3 due to the delays in production. On April 3, the broadcast began again from the first episode and was finally completed on June 22, 2020. A second season has been announced for October 2020, which revolves around the autumn and winter troops. It was originally planned for July to September.

The music for the series was composed by Kana Hashiguchi and Masaru Yokoyama . The opening song is Act! Addict! Actors! from the A3ders! group that formed for the game. The end credits were accompanied by Home , sung by the speakers of the spring troop. For the second part, the final song changes and is then sung by the speakers of the summer troupe.
