The ABO Wind AG is a project development company for investments in energy supply from renewable energy sources (wind, solar and biomass), based in Hesse state capital Wiesbaden .

history

The company started in 1996, when Jochen Ahn and Matthias Bockholt founded the "planning company for the use of wind power and other regenerative energies". In 2000 they converted the GmbH into a stock corporation and renamed it ABO Wind. The first part of the company name is an acronym from the surnames of the founders Ahn and Bockholt. In 1998, the first went from ABO Wind projected Bürgerwindpark in Framersheim in Rhineland-Palatinate to the grid. The company's international involvement began five years after it was founded. The oldest subsidiary abroad is ABO Wind España SAU, founded in Valencia in 2001.

In 2010, ABO Wind founded ABO Invest AG in order to operate an international portfolio of wind farms together with citizens. Around 5,000 citizens and foundations have participated so far.

At the Annual General Meeting in June 2017, the shareholders elected the former Rhineland-Palatinate Economics and Energy Minister Eveline Lemke to the Supervisory Board. The other members of the Supervisory Board are: Attorney Jörg Lukowsky (Chairman), Uwe Leprich , Norbert Breidenbach and Maike Schmidt.

Business activity

ABO Wind covers all stages of the development of renewable energy projects internationally - planning, financing, construction supervision and organization. The company is currently active in 16 countries on four continents. According to its own information, ABO Wind is working on the development of new projects with a total output of "a good ten gigawatts". That exceeds the output of the four largest nuclear power plants still on the grid in Germany in 2019 . Two thirds of the projects under development used wind power and one third solar power. ABO Wind also works on biogas plants exclusively in Germany and deals in particular with waste fermentation.

At the beginning of 2019, ABO Wind announced that it had secured feed-in tariffs for a 30 megawatt wind power project in Tunisia in a tender .

By January 2020, the company had connected around 700 wind energy , solar and biogas plants with a nominal output of over 1,500 megawatts in Germany, France, Finland, Spain, Great Britain, Bulgaria, the Republic of Ireland and Iran. Usually when they are commissioned, ABO Wind sells the systems to, for example, energy suppliers , cooperatives or institutional investors. ABO Invest AG has acquired more than a dozen wind farms, which produce electricity in Germany, Finland, France and the Republic of Ireland. ABO Wind developed further renewable energy projects with a nominal output of more than 1,300 megawatts until they were ready for construction and then sold them - especially in Argentina, Spain and Finland.

As a service, the company offers commercial and technical management for wind and solar parks as well as biogas plants. ABO Wind also offers maintenance and other services. Customers are buyers of the systems planned by ABO Wind as well as other operators such as Rheinenergie. To improve the security of wind turbines and control access, the company has developed the electronic locking system ABO Lock. In April 2019, ABO Wind Betriebs GmbH has wind farms with a total volume of 1.7 gigawatts under contract.

In the first 20 years of the company's history, wind power was at the center of business activity. Since 2016, ABO Wind has been increasingly involved in solar energy. In a solar tender in Greece in summer 2018, ABO Wind secured feed-in tariffs for five solar projects with a total of 45 megawatts of output.

ABO Wind also offers heat contracting and additional services. A department of the company is working on concepts for energy storage and demonstration projects. The focus is on the use of hydrogen.

share

The share is listed in electronic Xetra trading and on the open market on various German stock exchanges, including the M: access segment of the Munich Stock Exchange. Around 28 percent of the shares belong to the families of the two founders and board members, Jochen Ahn and Matthias Bockholt. The Frankfurt-based energy service provider Mainova holds ten percent of the shares , the remaining 34 percent are in free float.

The analysts Guido Hoymann ( Bankhaus Metzler ) and Dr. Karsten von Blumenthal (First Berlin) regularly rate the ABO Wind share. The analyzes are published on the company's website.

Corporate actions

A convertible bond issue implemented from 2018 to 2019 strengthened equity by 6.4 million euros. The company's aim was to finance the accelerated expansion of business activities to include photovoltaics and further internationalization.

Projects

In 2018, ABO Wind built a wind farm with five Senvion 3.2M122 wind turbines on the former mining areas around the Jänschwalde open-cast mine in Briesnig and used special techniques for the foundation construction to ensure stability. For example, ABO Wind introduced natural gravel as a filler material into the ground at a depth of 40 to 60 meters with the help of vibration and water flushing.

In connection with the wind farm planning, ABO Wind designs and promotes the tourist offer to upgrade the area. In 2015, the company set up a so-called energy experience tour in Weilrod im Taunus , which provides information on the history of energy use at the location. The regional association FrankfurtRheinMain recognized the adventure tour as an exemplary energy transition project. A film by the regional association presents the project. According to Mayor Marcus Kirchhoff, the Geierlay suspension bridge , which brings several hundred thousand visitors to Mörsdorf in Rhineland-Palatinate every year, could only be built because the continuous income of the community from the wind farm built by ABO Wind covers the running costs of the suspension bridge. In addition, the company designed and financed an exhibition in the local museum with the community.
