ABe 4/4

ABe 4/4 41 (Bernina Railway)

ABe 4/4 is the collective name in Switzerland for electric multiple units with seats in the first and second carriage class and four axles, all driven ( axle formula Bo'Bo '). Vehicles with this series designation are or were in use on various normal and narrow-gauge railways .

The older of these - technically and visually quite different - railcars were mostly put into service as BCe 4/4 and redrawn in 1956 when the third class was abolished. On the other hand, some railway companies have been doing without the first class since the 1980s and downgraded their existing ABe 4/4 to Be 4/4 .

Narrow-gauge railways

If the vehicles are not dealt with in detail in their own articles, the technical data are given in the order: Builder, year of commissioning, length over buffers, mass, power, maximum speed, seats 1./2. Class.

Rhaetian Railway

With the Rhaetian Railway these are:

Appenzell Railway

For the Appenzeller Bahn these are:

Ferrovia Biasca-Acquarossa

Number 4 came to the MOB in 1973 , which classified him as Be 4/4 1002. Number 5 came to FM through the OJB .

Ferrovia Lugano-Ponte Tresa

At Ferrovia Lugano-Ponte Tresa it is:

  • ABe 4/4 1–3, SWS / Alioth 1912, 16.07 m, 29 t, 210 kW, 55 km / h, 16/40 seats
  • ABe 4/4 4–5, SWS / SAAS 1952–58, 16.27 m, 30 t, 244 kW, 55 km / h, 8/48 seats

Number 3 was given to FM in 1995. Number 5 came to the MOB in 1981, which classified him as Be 4/4 1003.

Frauenfeld-Wil Railway

The following applies to the Frauenfeld-Wil-Bahn :

  • ABe 4/4 1–3, SWS / MFO 1921, 14.81 m, 28 t, 288 kW, 55 km / h, 6/30 places

The railcars were delivered as BCe 2/4 (power 132 kW, top speed 40 km / h) and received new engines in 1953-54. Number 1 is still operational as a historic vehicle.

Chemins de fer Fribourgeois Gruyère-Friborg-Morat

The Greyerzerbahnen CEG put a number of technically similar railcars into service in the years 1903–05, which differed significantly in their layout. There were one- and two-class vehicles, some with and without a luggage compartment. Over the years, the wagons were converted several times, preferably to ABe 4/4. The technical data describe the status after the last modification. The cars built by SWS in 1903 were originally 13.34 m long.

  • ABe 4/4 102, SWS / Alioth 1903, 14.25 m, 23.5 t, 100 kW, 50 km / h, originally BCe 4/4 , later 8/36 places
  • ABe 4/4 106, SWS / Alioth 1903, 14.25 m, 25.5 t, 192 kW, 50 km / h, originally BCFe 4/4 , later 8/32 places
  • ABe 4/4 107, SWS / Alioth 1903, 14.70 m, 27.0 t, 192 kW, 60 km / h, originally BCFe 4/4 , later 8/36 places
  • ABe 4/4 111, SWS / Alioth 1903, 14.19 m, 27.0 t, 264 kW, 60 km / h, originally CFe 4/4 , later 8/36 places
  • ABe 4/4 113, SIG / Alioth 1904, 13.73 m, 23.0 t, 264 kW, 60 km / h, originally CFZe 4/4 , later 8/24 places
  • ABe 4/4 115 and 117, SWS / Alioth 1905, 15.58 m, 29.5 t, 296 kW, 60 km / h, originally BCe 4/4 , later 16/30 places
  • ABe 4/4 121, SWS / MFO 1922, 17.24 m, 35.0 t, 486 kW, 75 km / h, originally BCe 4/4 , later 8/50 places

Chemin de fer Yverdon – Ste-Croix

The following applies to the Chemin de fer Yverdon – Ste-Croix :

  • ABe 4/4 1–3, SIG / BBC 1945, 18.79 m, 37 t, 440 kW, 65 km / h, 8/38 seats

On February 14, 1976, cars 2 and 3 collided head- on at Essert-sous-Champvent . The railcar built from the parts that could still be used was given the number 5. Number 1 was renumbered to 4 in 1981.

Standard gauge railways

Pure ABe are rare on the standard-gauge railways, firstly because newer vehicles are often approved for increased cornering speed and are therefore marked as RABe. Second, because the high-performance railcars and EAV railcars , which were supplied to almost all private railways in the 1960s, are equipped with a baggage compartment and are therefore labeled as ABDe / RABDe if they have compartments for both classes.

Chemins de fer Fribourgeois Gruyère-Friborg-Morat

At the Chemins de fer fribourgeois Gruyère – Friborg – Morat these are:

  • ABe 4/4 166–167, SIG / BBC 1947-48, 22.70 m, 57 t, 726 kW, 100 km / h, 76 seats

Swiss Southeast Railway

The Swiss Southeast Railway has a total of 9 vehicles: eight railcars come from the years 1939/1940, the so-called glass boxes . The numbers of the railcars changed due to modifications. The 4 CFZe 4/4 machines with the original numbers 11 to 14 were the first to be delivered.

  • CFZe 4/4 11-14, SIG / SLM / MFO / BBC / SAAS 1939-40, 19.60 m, 44 t, 735 kW, 80 km / h, 53 seats, all converted to ABe 4/4 with the numbers 7, 5, 12, 6. Around 1957 the cars were renamed ABe 4/4.
  • BCFZe 4/4 1–4, SWS / SLM / MFO / BBC / SAAS 1940, 19.60 m, 44 t, 735 kW, 80 km / h, 53 seats, around 1957 the wagons were renamed ABe 4/4.

Of these eight railcars, numbers 1, 2 and 4 were modernized in 1979-82 and became numbers 14, 13 and 11. The number 6 originally delivered as number 14 also became number 12, now the third railcar in the series who had this number.

  • ABe 4/4 71, SIG / BBC 1959, 23.70 m, 69 t, 1,574 kW, 110 km / h, 17 + 32 spaces, converted to BDe 4/4 80 in 1979, later 576 480, today 576 048. This was the one only ABe high-performance railcars .
