history

The ACV Automobil-Club Verkehr was founded on November 23, 1962 by DEVK Insurance from Cologne . Originally, the ACV was intended as an automobile club for railway employees and their families. Today the ACV is an independent automobile club for all road users, which supports its members with a wide range of services in all matters of mobile life.

As early as 1968, the ACV had 32,000 members and in the same year the ACV opened up to all drivers, regardless of their occupation. At the beginning the ACV was a corporate member of the Automobile Club of Germany (AvD), which at that time also used their red cars for the service of the ACV.

From 1970 the ACV called itself "Automobile Club Verkehr" and began to expand the range of services. Back then, customers not only received reliable breakdown assistance for a contribution of 18 DM, but also services such as the procurement of petrol vouchers, camping IDs, border papers and road maps. The additional service most requested by members today, tour advice for travel, was already included at this point.

In 1973 it was converted into an independent association. In order to make the increasing number of members and the increase in local clubs manageable, the organization was revised during the same period. For the first time, it was divided into national groups and local clubs.

In 1985, the ACV took over its own breakdown service at home and abroad and built up its own network of breakdown vehicles. As a special service, the first issue of the members' magazine "ACV Profil" was published in the same year, which is still distributed regularly to the members today.

After reunification, the ACV also gained a foothold in the new federal states. This resulted in a real breakthrough in membership numbers. In 1992 the automobile club passed the 100,000 mark for the first time. In order to meet the changing needs of its members, the ACV transformed into an automobile club for the whole family in the 1990s and introduced special tariffs for young people and partners. In 2009, another discounted tariff was established with the single membership.

In 2012 the ACV celebrated its 50th anniversary. For the anniversary year, the ACV had over 300,000 members, which raised the Cologne club to third place among the automobile clubs in Germany.

In 2016, the ACV introduced the bicycle protection letter free of charge in all of its tariffs and thus extended its concept of mobility to include bicycles. This made the ACV the first automobile club to send its members help in the event of a breakdown or accident with a bicycle or pedelec.

In 2016, 2017 and 2018, the ACV recorded new membership records, making it the fastest growing automobile club in Germany in 2018, with membership growth of 9.4 percent.
