The AC 1888 Marburg e. V. is a sports club from Marburg .

history

The Marburg Athlete Club was founded in 1888 and is one of the oldest sports clubs in Marburg. In the early days, the weightlifting disciplines of lifting and continuous lifting, as well as wrestling and stone pushing were practiced. In December 1925, the original Athletenclub 1888 Marburg merged with the competing Athletics-Sports Club 1908 Marburg to form today's sports association Athletenclub 1888 Marburg. At that time there was a new addition to the participation in competitions in lawn strength sports .

After the Second World War , the club was reorganized and the sports of weightlifting, wrestling and lawn strength sports could be practiced again. For a short time, the club also provided a boxing relay . In 1971/72, in cooperation with the city of Marburg, a former fire station was converted into today's training facility and club house, after training had previously been carried out in various school sports halls.

Around 1980 the club began to practice the new sport of powerlifting . The other sports practiced were gradually abandoned in favor of powerlifting and general fitness training. In 1988 the club celebrated its 100th anniversary with a national deadlift tournament .

The club's athletes can achieve several Hessen championship titles in the individual disciplines of powerlifting every year. There are also numerous German championship titles as well as federal and state records.
