AEK Athens VC ( Greek ΑΕΚ Αθήνα ΤΑΠ ) is the volleyball department of the renowned Greek sports club AEK Athens . The club plays its games in Glyfada .

history

Three years after the AEK sports club was founded in 1924, a volleyball team was also launched. As early as 1928, she qualified for the very first Panhellenic tournament that local rival Panellinios could win. In contrast to other clubs, the game was not resumed after the Second World War . In the early 1960s, the attempt to reactivate the department failed.

In 1982 a new team was created; this started in the lowest district class of Athens . After several promotions, they finally reached the second highest division, which ended in their first season in 1992/93 with second place. But that did not entitle to ascent. In the following season 1993/94 one secured under the direction of coach Stojan Gunzev the first place and thus the first promotion to the upper house. The newly promoted failed to keep the class and stepped back into league two. The immediate resurgence led to only a short abstinence from the House of Lords. With renewed first class in 1996/97, the Athenians managed to secure fifth place this time. They repeated this success the following year. 2001/02 was again relegated from the first division. AEK rose a total of five times from the House of Lords and six times up again by the 2014/15 season.

In the League Cup, the AEK celebrated its greatest success by reaching the final in 1999, which was played in Drama . Opponent was the reigning champions Olympiacos Piraeus . The team had to admit defeat 1: 3 sets. As Olympiakos was already qualified as a champion for the Champions League , the final qualification for participation in the European Cup Winners' Cup . The competition represented the first and so far only participation in international business. The volleyball club managed to reach the final four . In the semifinals, however, they had to admit defeat to Alpitour Traco Cuneo . With the following win against Galatasaray Istanbul , the club secured third place.

2013/14 the AEK won the third edition of Nikos Samaras Ligacup when he in the final in Alexandroupoli the Foinikas Sirou with 3: 2 sets could defeat.
