Harmen Steenwijck , also Herman van Steenwijk or Harmen van Steenwyck (* approx. 1612 in Delft , today: Netherlands ; † after 1656 in Leiden , Netherlands) was a Dutch painter of the Golden Age who became known for his still lifes .

Life

Like his brother Pieter Steenwijck, Harmen was apprenticed to his uncle, the painter David Bailly , in Leiden in 1628 by his father Evert . In the following years he was a painter there before returning to his hometown in 1633. He was quite successful with his fruit still lifes and in 1636 became a member of the Guild of St. Luke in Delft.

Steenwijck traveled to the Dutch East Indies , today's Indonesia, between 1654 and 1656 . After his return he has not been known to have worked as a painter since 1656. He died in Leiden around 1676.
