Apart from the works, little is known about the person of Pieter Steenwijck and the dates of his life, so that the dates of birth and death are based on comparative estimates. It is certain that Steenwijck came from a family of craftsmen in Delft. His father was Evert Harmensz who settled in Delft around 1595 as an optician and originally came from Steenwijk . Steenwijck's older brother was Harmen Steenwijck (1612 - after 1656) who was also a specialist in still life painting. Both brothers were born through their uncle, David Baillytrained in suffering; Pieter in the period from 1632 to 1635. After completing their training they returned to Delft and shared their work and studio.

In 1642, Pieter was a member of the important Delft Guild of St. Luke (registered on November 10th) and in 1644 he joined the Guild of St. Luke in Leiden. In the period between 1652 and 1654 he worked in The Hague. A vanitas still life in the form of an allegory on the death of Admiral Maarten Tromp is on display at Museum De Lakenhal in Leiden.

Steenwijck must still have lived and worked as an artist in 1656, as one of the last works, a vanitas still life (Leiden), dates to this year.
