The AFK Kolín is a Czech football club from the Central Bohemian town of Kolín . The club, founded in 1900, was one of the strongest in the country between 1926 and 1936. In 1929 and 1932 the AFK won the amateur championship, in the playing years 1934/35 and 1935/36 he took part in the state league.

Club history

As in many Bohemian cities, high school students in Kolín discovered football at the turn of the century. In 1902, FC Kolín, a football club, and AC Kolín, an athletic club, merged and founded a club called Athleticko-Footballový Klub Kólin . Between 1906 and 1908, the AFK square was fenced in and the club became a full member of the Bohemian Football Association ČSF.

From 1908 to 1914 the club regularly took part in the so-called Charity Cup , the most important competition in Bohemia at the time. The team reached the final in 1911, but lost to Slavia Prague 1: 4. In 1912, in addition to the Charity Cup, a championship of the ČSF was played. Here, too, the AFK Kolín reached the final against Sparta Prague . After a 1-1 draw, a replay was scheduled, which the AFK lost 4-0.

After the First World War , the blue-whites took part in the championship of the Central Bohemian Gaus in 1920. They won the II. Třída and rose to the 1st třída, the strongest division in Czechoslovakia. Opponents such as Sparta Prague, Slavia Prague or Viktoria Žižkov, however, proved to be overwhelming: AFK Kolín finished last with just one win out of eleven games at the end of the season. The return to the top division - which was, however, expanded to 22 teams - succeeded in 1924. The championship was never played to the end, but the AFK's sixth place is still included in the statistics.

When professionalism was introduced in 1925, the AFK Kolín remained in the amateur camp and was subsequently absent from hardly a final round of the Czechoslovak amateur championship. At the first event in 1927, the blue-whites failed 2: 3 at DSV Brno. Also in the 1927/28 season the end came in the first round, the SK Kročehlavy had proven to be too strong. In the following season, AFK Kolín triumphed for the first time after successes over ŠK Žilina (3: 1 and 2: 0), SK Sparta Košíře (1: 1 and 2: 1) and the final opponent DFC Prague (5: 7 and 5: 2). A year later, the AFK was again in the final, but this time lost to the 1. ČsŠK Bratislava with 2: 2 and 2: 4. In the 1930/31 season, a third place in the 1st A třída was not enough to participate in the finals. The team won the amateur title again in 1932. In the first round the team won 4: 1 and 6: 2 against 1. ČsŠK Bratislava, in the semifinals against Karlsbader FK with 5: 2 and 1: 2 and in the final with 5: 3 and 2: 2 against Sparta Košíře . The team from Kolín also made it to the final the following year, but this time DFC Prague got the upper hand with 1-0 and 2-2.

This result qualified the AFK Kolín after the merger of professionals and amateurs for the 1st state league. In the 1934/35 season, the team saved themselves on the last day of the game with a 2-1 win over Sparta Prague, which lost the championship that was believed to be safe. In the game year 1935/36, the blue-whites were no longer so lucky and were relegated to the bottom of the table. Until 1944, AFK Kolín played in the Divize, the second highest division at the time.

After the Second World War , AFK Kolín was never able to build on its previous successes. Under the name TJ Kolín the club was in the years 1978/79 and 1979/80 - also thanks to a reorganization of the divisions - second class. After that, the club held for many years in the third division, which he could no longer hold in 1988. In the summer of 1992, the team was even relegated from the fourth division, to which they returned after two years, but only for three years. During this time Mogul Kolín, today's FK Kolín, ran from his rivals as the best team in town. For the 1999/2000 season, AFK Kolín merged with FC Geosan Velim to form AFK Geosan Kolín-Velim. This team won the Středočeský přebor and was eligible for promotion to the fourth division, but the two clubs dissolved the merger again. While Velim continued to play in the fourth division, the AFK Kolín no longer put on a men's team. Since then, only AFK Kolín junior teams have participated in the league.

Club names

The AFK Kolín emerged in 1902 from the predecessor clubs AC Kolín and FC Kolín. After the Communist Party came to power in 1948, the association was renamed several times in quick succession: 1948 Sokol AFK Kolín, 1949 Sokol Modrobílí Kolín, 1950 ZSJ ČSD Kolín and 1953 ČSD Lokomotiva Kolín. In 1973 the club merged with Tatra Kolín to form TJ Kolín. From 1983 the association was called TJ Agro Klín. In the early 1990s, the club returned to the original name AFK.
