history

The building was constructed between 1834 and 1838 as the Perth Infirmary . The Scottish architect William Mackenzie is responsible for the design . After a new hospital was opened in Perth in 1914, the Perth Infirmary was closed, but from 1915 it served as a military hospital for the wounded of the First World War . The Perthshire Education Authority took over the building in 1920. From 1930 the districts of Perthshire and Kinross-shire used the former hospital as the main administrative center. After the administration moved in 1985, the building was expanded in 1994 and the AK Bell Library opened there. It is named after the whiskey industrialist Arthur Kinmond Bell (1868–1942), whose charitable foundation runs the library.
