history

Alois Kober (1908–1996) laid the foundation stone for AL-KO vehicle technology when he founded Alois Kober GmbH in 1931. The company began as a small forge in Großkötz. In 1952 the production of handbrake levers started. In the following years the production of axles and frame chassis for caravans started. The first subsidiary was founded as early as 1958 and the sons Kurt (1936–2015), Willy and Herbert Kober, all of whom were apprenticed to their father, took on joint responsibility. The first foreign branch was founded in Austria in 1961, further branches in England, France, Italy and Switzerland followed in 1970. The development of the AKS track protection systems in 1975 and the market launch of today's AL-KO chassis were important steps for the success of the AL- KO vehicle technology. After the opening of the USA in 1983 and Australia in 1986, AL-KO Kunststofftechnik was founded one year later. In 1987 Alois Kober GmbH was transferred to AL-KO Kober AG. All three Kober brothers acted there as board members. In addition, the AL-KO Damping Technology Hartha division was added in 1994. In 2012 Sawiko Vehicle Accessories GmbH was taken over and operated as an independent brand. In the same year, another milestone took place with the inauguration of the customer center at the headquarters in Kleinkötz.

In May 2013, the stock corporation was converted under German law into a stock corporation under European law with the name AL-KO Kober SE . A year later, AL-KO acquired Bradley Doubledock from England.

At the beginning of 2016, AL-KO Kober SE sold the vehicle technology division, which merged with Dexter Axle to form DexKo Global Inc. Since then, AL-KO Fahrzeugtechnik has been operating as an independent brand under the umbrella of DexKo Global and is responsible for the markets outside the United States within the group. The American investment company KPS Capital Partners acts as the majority shareholder of DexKo Global. KPS secured the majority of the shares in 2017 from the also US-American Sterling Group , which still owns shares in the company.

After the merger to form DexKo Global and the resulting international expansion strategy, the takeovers of Winterhoff GmbH and Melbourne Trailer and Caravan Supplies Australia followed. Most recently, AL-KO completed the full integration of BPW Vehicle Technology in 2017.
