ALP is a band founded and based in Berlin , which mainly deals with the dubbing of silent films .

history

ALP was founded in 1998 by Tom van Alp (keyboard) and Mattef Kuhlmey (guitar, bass, laptop, vocals). ALP emerged from the band "Project Skull", to which Hans Narva was one of the two ALP founders. Originally planned as a two-man electro bigbeat project, the band members soon remembered their profession as guitarists. For the electronic part in 2000, Per “Ampere” Salzwedel and Theo Straylight were added. In the following, the band dedicated itself to the tradition of silent film scoring already cultivated in "Project Skull". Soundtracks to Nosferatu ( FW Murnau ) and Dr. Mabuse - The Player ( Fritz Lang ). In 2004 Per Salzwedel and Tom van Alp left the band. In the following year, Mattef Kuhlmey wrote a soundtrack for An Andalusian Dog ( Luis Buñuel ), which he also performed under the band name, albeit in a solo line-up. In 2005 he reformed the band. In addition to the old comrade Theo Straylight, Alex “Machine” Lode (formerly “Hands Up Excitement”) belonged to the band, which also expanded the sound spectrum of ALP with drums and percussion. Between 2006 and 2008 Konrad Hempel acted as the second guitarist. During this time, the band toured as a quartet with the soundtrack to the film Battleship Potemkin ( Sergej Eisenstein ). The last personnel change marked the entry of Daniel Dorsch (formerly "Madonna Hip Hop Massaker" and "Tronthaim"), who replaced Konrad Hempel. In 2009 the current program for the film The tired death (Fritz Lang) was created. ALP's live performances usually take place in arthouse cinemas, where the film and the band can be experienced synchronously. This concept found an audience in German-speaking countries as well as in Poland.

Band name

The name ALP is the acronym for "Aggressive Loop Productions". However, the band sometimes appeared under the name "Analog Love Providers".

style

In the initial phase as a two-man project, ALP played a purely electronic mix of trance, big beat and trip-hop. Ever since ALP turned to dubbing silent films from the 20s and 30s, the song-oriented approach gave way to an experimental approach in an analog-electronic sound garment. The different dramaturgies of the film scenes find a musical equivalent in spherical electronic parts on the one hand and noisy rock sound from guitar thunderstorms and drums on the other.
