Herbst in Peking is a German rock band that was founded in 1987 in East Berlin .
history
Herbst in Peking was founded as a band in 1987 by Rex Joswig in East Berlin. Next to him played the guitarist Alexander Istschenko , the bassist Hans Tomato (actually Torsten Müller-Fornah, also Mircea Dan Ionascu or Hans Narva), the drummer Benno Verch and Dr. Totenhöfer (Torsten Ratheischak) on the keyboard. The formation belonged to the “other bands” that, contrary to the official cultural policy, expressed their own critical points of view. The name refers to a book by Boris Vian . Due to possible copyright problems , the abbreviation "hip" was used in official correspondence. The stage program offered a grotesque parody of the personality cult of Russian, Chinese and Romanian characteristics. After the massacre on Tian'anmen Square in Beijing (July 1989), the band's permission to perform was revoked shortly before a benefit concert for UNICEF in Kleinmachnow . The song Bakschischrepublik became the turning point an anthem of the GDR -Rockszene. At that time, the band formed their own record label, Peking Records.
Band founder and singer Rex Joswig presented the program Grenzpunkt Null , which ran in the 1990s on DT64 , later on MDR Sputnik and on Reboot.FM. Autumn in Beijing was only sporadically on stage during this and the following time, mostly in small clubs in Berlin . Work on a new album began as early as 2008, the pieces of which will be presented on a tour through several East German cities in the first third of 2010.
Parts of the band including Rex Joswig appear as The Hidden Sea Sound System and in 2011 they released the album Lighthouse Madness .
