AN / ALE-40
The self-protection system AN / ALE-40 ( JETDS designation) is a decoy launcher for combat aircraft . It was produced by the US manufacturer Tracor and the British group BAE Systems .
description
The ALE-40 is used to eject chaffs and flares to protect the carrier aircraft from infrared and radar- guided missiles . The system is attached externally to the weapon stations of the carrier aircraft, with two launchers with a capacity of 30 decoys being attached to each station. Since the ALE-40 is integrated in a carrier pylon, the usual weapon systems can still be attached to the weapon station. The loaded system weighs around 30 kg and has the air resistance of an AIM-9 Sidewinder .
The production of the ALE-40 has meanwhile been stopped.
variants
- AN / ALE-40 (V) 4/5/6 : This variant was developed for internal use on the F / A-18 Hornet and is located in the rear part of the aircraft fuselage.
- AN / ALE-40 (V) 7/8/9 : This version was designed for semi-internal use on the F-5E Tiger II . It consists of two launchers and can be found near the left wing root .
- AN / ALE-40 (V) 10 : This version is intended for internal use on the A-10 Thunderbolt II .
- AN / ALE-40 (V) 11 : Variant for installation on the A-7 Corsair II .
- AN / ALE-40 (N) : This version is a modification for use on the Dutch NF-5B Freedom Fighter aircraft . It weighs less than 30 kg when loaded.
