The AN / TPQ-36 is an artillery reconnaissance radar that was developed to replace the AN / MPQ-4 and older artillery reconnaissance radars. It is supported by the AN / TPQ-37 for clarification . With different software, the hardware shelter can be used for both radar devices.

The AN / TPQ-36 locates enemy bullets fully automatically. The system electronically scans the horizon at a latitude of 90 ° several times per second, automatically picks up projectiles and rockets and accompanies them up to the arithmetic determination of the weapon position. The coordinates and the height of the enemy artillery position are displayed to the operator. The automatic position determination happens so quickly that the data is already available before the bullet hits.

In addition to this ability, other modifications are possible. The normal sector width of 90 ° can be extended up to a full circle of 360 °. The radar can also be used to correct fire for your own artillery by extrapolating the trajectories of your own projectiles.
