AO World plc is a specialized in household appliances British online - mail order company . AO has been represented on the German market since October 2014 with its subsidiary AO Deutschland Limited, which operates as a company under English law.

The company was founded in 2001 by John Roberts in Great Britain as "Appliances Online" (translated: "Household Appliances Online") on the basis of a pub bet from 2000 . In 2009, “Appliances Online” acquired the logistics company “Expert Logistics” and has since been delivering the ordered goods to customers in Great Britain itself. In 2013 “Appliances Online” changed its branding to “ao.com”. AO has been listed on the London Stock Exchange since February 26, 2014 . AO is headquartered in Bolton , UK. In Germany, the company headquarters and the logistics center are in Bergheim-Paffendorf . There are further logistics locations in Berlin , Hamburg , Frankfurt and Munich .

In 2013 and 2014, ao.com was ranked 4th of the 100 best medium-sized employers in Great Britain in the Sunday Times , after finishing 63rd in 2011 and 5th in 2012.
