The Scottish Football League First Division was played for the tenth time in 1984/85 as only the second highest Scottish league . It was also the tenth discharge as second highest football -Spielklasse the gentlemen in Scotland under the name First Division . In the 1984/85 season, 14 clubs competed against each other in a total of 39 match days. Each team played three times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship was won by Motherwell FC , which at the same time secured participation in the 1985/86 Premier Division season . In addition to Well , the runner-up FC Clydebank also rose. Meadowbank Thistle and FC St. Johnstone had to relegate to the Second Division . The top scorer with 22 goals was Gerard McCoy from FC Falkirk .
