The APS underwater assault rifle ( Russian АПС Автомат Подводный Специальный ) is a fully automatic underwater weapon .
This was developed and produced in the early 1970s; to this day the weapon is manufactured in the Tula arms factory and exported by Rosoboronexport . It fires 5.66 caliber arrow ammunition from a 26-round magazine and has a range of 30 m at a depth of 5 m and 10 m at a depth of 40 m. The maximum operating depth of the weapon is 45 m.
The rifle is a special version of the Kalashnikov that was adapted for underwater use by combat swimmers . APS stands for Awtomat Podwodni Spezialni or "Special underwater assault rifle".
