AS90 is a British self-propelled howitzer introduced into the British Army in 1993 .

description

When the trinational project Panzerhaubitze 70 (British designation SP70 ) with the participation of the Western European states Great Britain, Germany and Italy failed in 1986 , the Ministry of Defense of the United Kingdom looked for an alternative. BAE Systems Land Systems was found as the manufacturer . 179 AS90s were delivered to the British Army by 1995. There they replaced the FV433 Abbot and M109 self-propelled howitzer and the FH70 towed field howitzer .

The engine consists of a VTA903T V8 diesel engine from Cummins , which generates an output of 490 kW (660 hp). The AS90 is also equipped with an auxiliary motor that supplies the entire vehicle with power when the main motor is switched off.
