ASARCO is an American mining company. The Tucson- based company operates several open pit copper mines ( Mission , Silver Bell and Ray ) and a smelter in Arizona .

ASARCO was in 1899 by Henry H. Rogers , William Rockefeller , Adolph Lewisohn , Anton Eilers and Leonard Lewisohn as A merican S melting a nd R efining Co founded mpany. The new company consolidated a number of lead-silver deposits and smelters . In 1901 Meyer Guggenheim and later his sons took over the company. From 1901 to 1958, ASARCO was part of the Dow Jones Industrial Average .

In 1975 the company was renamed ASARCO Incorporated. In 1999 ASARCO was taken over by Grupo México , which was founded in 1965 as Asarco Mexicana .

From 2005 to 2009 the company was in bankruptcy protection to Chapter 11 . This enabled ASARCO to discharge its environmental obligations.
