from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

ASMOSIA is a scientific society (Association for the Study of Marble and Other Stones in Antiquity) of natural scientists and archaeologists from all over the world who research the marbles and natural stones used in antiquity, and exchange knowledge and experience at international conferences.

For example, the participants in international conferences that take place every two to three years in Venice in 2000 came from Italy, the USA, Greece, Germany, France, Switzerland, Germany, Turkey, Great Britain, Slovenia, Israel, India, Norway , Romania, Spain, Albania, Denmark, Hungary, Cyprus, Belgium and Poland. Cross-border cooperation will take place in preparation for the conferences.

The company is concerned with the research of historical soft and hard stones and their deposits and with manufacturing techniques for ancient buildings , building decorations , building sculptures and sculptures .
The scientific research of rocks that were historically used and processed requires the application of so-called archaeometry in order to give archaeologists , art historians and other scientists reliable information about the deposits from which the material used in antiquity originates. This also means that research is carried out in ancient quarries . It is important to know how the deposits were developed, how the quarry work was organized and who worked there. For other areas of science, such as the humanities, it is of great importance which historical stones were used and where they came from. From this, conclusions can be drawn about the countries from which the ashlar originates, in which time periods they were created and where they were installed, for example to reconstruct trade relations, people from history and transport routes. In doing so, ASMOSIA collects data on deposits and artifacts , puts them into a historical framework and interprets them. The scientific projects presented at the conferences and their results will be published in conference proceedings.

In addition to the traditional methods of optical rock determination, microscopic examination of thin and polished sections as well as the entire arsenal of modern geochemistry and the latest physical examination methods are used.
