AT-L ( Russian АТ-Л ) is an all-terrain, unarmored, non-buoyant caterpillar vehicle from Soviet production that was mainly used as a tractor . AT-L stands for артиллерийский тягач - лёгкий (artillery traction device - light).

development

At the end of the 1940s there was a need for a powerful, off-road towing vehicle in the military and economics. In the military field, this was mainly caused by the increase in the caliber of the artillery , which led to increasingly heavy artillery. In the civil sector, the demand developed due to the economic development of sparsely populated and largely impassable areas in the east of the country. The AT-L was developed in 1947 in the Charkow tractor factory under the direction of the well-known designer AA Morosow . The target was a traction device for a trailer load of up to 6000 kg with a load capacity of 2000 kg. In order to achieve the required off-road mobility, a caterpillar vehicle was developed. Production began in Kharkov in 1947 and continued until 1967.

construction

For the AT-L, too, existing assemblies from tank and truck production were largely used. This reduced the development time and simplified production. While the first vehicles still had a running gear with six pairs of rollers and support rollers, as the SU-76 had, later vehicles used a roller mechanism with five pairs of rollers. On this chain tractor, too, the tub was turned by 180 °. The engine, clutch, gearbox, steering gear and drive wheels are located in the front of the vehicle, the guide wheels of the drive in the rear. The JaAZ -204K (ЯАЗ-204К) engine is a variant of the JaAZ-M204W (ЯАЗ-М204В) engine designed for the MAZ-502 truck . The cabin for the crew is also located in the front part of the vehicle. The cab of the ZIS-150 or ZIL-164 truck was used for the construction . There was space for three crew members. The metal platform behind the driver's cab with a load capacity of 2000 kg offers space for eight to ten additional soldiers.

With the crawler tracks, a maximum ground pressure of 0.463 kg / cm 2 is achieved. The climbing ability is in the loaded state without towing a maximum of 35 °, the ground clearance mm 350th The vehicle can cross trenches up to 1.0 m wide and, without preparation, drive through bodies of water up to 0.6 m deep.

commitment

The vehicle was primarily used as an artillery tractor for howitzers of the caliber 122 and 152 mm and for heavy mortars of the caliber 160 to 240 mm. The AT-L also served as a base vehicle for various special bodies. The vehicle was delivered to practically all states that also used the corresponding Soviet weapon systems. Egyptian and Syrian troops also used the AT-L in the wars against Israel.
