AWO junior university

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The AWO Junior University was an educational institution in Salzgitter that was operated as a non-profit GmbH .

Between 2003 and the end of 2012, the junior university in the Braunschweig region promoted young academics and artists. The junior university offered seminars on all aspects of energy, the environment and mobility for five to 19 year olds. Under the motto “Children are naturally curious”, interest in technical contexts should be encouraged. The offer was intended to raise awareness of environmental issues and to promote the conscious use of fossil fuels.

In addition, as many children and young people as possible from the region should be given the opportunity to deal with current topics from the natural sciences, technology, social, social and economic sciences in order to encourage interest in scientific work and university studies.

In 2007 the junior university was recognized by UNESCO as an official project as part of the World Decade of Education for Sustainable Development .

At the end of 2010, the city of Salzgitter, the Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences and the AWO concluded a cooperation agreement that regulated the cooperation between the parties involved. The AWO and the Adult Education Center in Salzgitter should primarily look after schools and kindergartens. The AWO offered seminars and laboratory exercises on natural science topics and the adult education center on humanities issues. At the university, events in the style of a lecture should offer an insight into the course.

The city of Salzgitter subsidized the junior university with 40,000 euros annually, and it also received 25,500 euros from the energy supplier WEVG . After the city canceled the lease for the classrooms for the end of August 2012, a large number of offers had to be canceled as no suitable alternative options could be found. In September 2012, the city canceled the cooperation agreement, which led to the junior university being dissolved at the end of the year. Cooperation with schools has also been discontinued.

In the nine years of its existence, the junior university held over 1,000 events and most recently had 7586 participant days .
