OSTIV

The OSTIV (Organization Scientifique et Technique du Vol à Voile) promotes the exchange of experience and cooperation in gliding between experts and pilots of all nations.

The OSTIV was founded in 1948 in Samedan / Switzerland as the successor organization to the ISTUS (International Study Commission for Glider Flight) founded in 1930. The aim and purpose is the further development of gliding from a technical and scientific point of view, while purely sporting aspects of gliding are handled by the FAI (Fédération Aéronautique Internationale) or the IGC (International Gliding Commission), which is subordinate to it.

The OSTIV is divided into a technical and a scientific section. The scientific section includes the “Meteorological Panel”, the technical section consists of the “Sailplane Development Panel” and the “Training & Safety Panel”.

OSTIV is the publisher of the scientific journal "Technical Soaring". The OSTIV Congress takes place every two years during and at the location of the World Gliding Championships. The XXXII. The OSTIV Congress took place from July 30th to August 6th, 2014 parallel to the 33rd World Gliding Championships in the 15m class , the 18m class and the open class in Leszno , Poland . The German meteorologist and pioneer of glider research Walter Georgii became the first honorary president from 1948 .
