A New Kind of Science is the work of British physicist and computer scientist Stephen Wolfram .

The book is designed as an empirical study of dynamic systems such as cellular automata . Wolfram calls the systems he investigated simple programs and advocates the thesis that the methods used to investigate these programs have epistemological significance for other research fields such as biology, physics and social sciences.

Wolfram's theses are controversial in the scientific community and have often been criticized. The book was a bestseller when it appeared in 2002 .

A New Kind of Science has received comparatively high media coverage in the Anglo-Saxon world and has been reviewed in articles from The New York Times , Newsweek , Wired , and The Economist .

In addition, it has been reviewed in scientific periodicals, where it has been criticized for its modesty and lack of original ideas. Other reviews speak of stimulating new ideas.
