A Thief Catcher (Alternative title: His regular job ) is a slapstick -Kurzfilm from 1914. In the long-lost black and white - silent film has Charlie Chaplin a supporting role as a police officer, one of his appearances as one of the Keystone Kops .

The deputy sheriff Suspicious John (German: suspicious Hannes ) observed two crooks as they tumble a third down a slope. The crooks notice him and start pursuing him. John hides in a hut that soon turns out to be the home of the crooks. When the crooks discover him inside, they want to shoot him. They are disturbed by two police officers who call the crooks to account. When a policeman tries to enter the back room where John is, John hits him on the head with a shovel. The policemen withdraw. In the meantime, John has sent his dog to the police with a message. Shortly before the police arrive in force, John escapes, but returns armed with a club, whose first use hits the police again. After a policeman (Charlie Chaplin) hits him with a baton as well, they both fall to the ground next to each other in the final second of the film.

Rediscovery

The short film, shot in 35mm format, was lost until 2010 by film historian Paul E. Gierucki an incomplete 16mm copy was found at an antiques sale in Michigan .
