The photo A woman protects her son by journalist Samuel Aranda was voted Press Photo of the Year 2011. It shows the Yemeni student Zayed Al-Qaws (* 1993 or 1994) from Sanaa , Yemen , wounded in his mother's arms.

Life and circumstances of the photo

At the time of recording, Al-Qaws was a student and was also making money by driving a taxi. During the Arab Spring there were also protests against the regime of Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Salih , whose members were shot with snipers. On October 15, 2011, Al-Qaws was wounded and taken to a makeshift hospital set up in a mosque, where the photo was taken. Al-Qaws was also reported in his home country after the photo was awarded.

Image reception

The picture, taken during the protests in Yemen , won the 2011 Press Photo of the Year award . It shows a veiled Muslim woman holding an injured relative in her arms. The jury justified the decision by saying that the photo was an example of “the entire region” , symbolizing the protests in Yemen, Egypt , Tunisia , Libya , Syria and thus the entire Arab Spring.
