Aaron (Hermit)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aaron was a 6th century monk who lived as a hermit on a small island near the north-west coast of Brittany . He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church .

Life

Aaron was likely of Welsh descent. He is only known through a mention in the 15th and 16th chapters of the oldest version of the Vita sancti Machuti (life of St. Machutus ) , written after 825 . Accordingly , when Machutus (also called Malo ), when he was translating from England to France, first docked at the small island on which Aaron lived as a hermit. Machutus received Machutus in a friendly manner, and the two saints lived together for a while until Machutus became bishop of the settlement of Aleth opposite the island . At the site of the ancient Aleth is now Saint-Servan , a district of Saint-Malo since 1967 . When he died around the middle of the 6th century, Aaron appears to have been the head of a monastery community.

The island inhabited by Aaron was named after him until Jean de la Grille , Bishop of Aleth, moved the seat of his diocese to this island in the middle of the 12th century, which was then called Saint-Malo. Today it is connected to the mainland.

Aaron's Memorial Day is celebrated in Saint-Malo on June 22nd and in other places on June 21st. He has his own chapel in Saint-Malo. He is also the patron saint of the Saint-Aaron church named after him in the north-west French parish of Lamballe , part of the diocese of Saint-Brieuc .
