Aaron Marshall Elliott

Aaron Marshall Elliott (born January 24, 1844 in North Carolina , † November 9, 1910 in Baltimore ) was an American Romanist .

life and work

Elliott came from a Quaker family from North Carolina. He received his PhD from Harvard University in 1867 . Then he studied eight years in Europe, first in the Romance countries, the last three years in Munich. He returned to the United States and taught Romance studies at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore , founded in 1876, for 35 years , from 1892 as a full professor. Elliott founded the Modern Language Association of America and its organ PMLA in 1884 and the magazine Modern Language Notes in 1886 . His student and successor Edward Cooke Armstrong named the publication series "Elliott Monographs in the Romance Languages ​​and Literatures" (Princeton 1914–1976) after him.
