The Abai Opera House

The Kazakh State Academic Abai Opera and Ballet Theater ( Kazakh Абай атындағы қазақ мемлекеттік академиялық опера және балет театры ; Russian Казахский Государственный академический театр оперы и балета имени Абая ) is an opera house in the Kazakh city of Almaty . It is named after the Kazakh writer Abai Qunanbajuly .

history

Today's opera house goes back to the establishment of a music studio by a resolution of the People's Commissariat for Education of the Kazakh SSR on September 29, 1933. The staff consisted of 50 actors, 20 symphonic orchestras and twelve members of the national orchestra. The first performance took place on January 13, 1934 with the libretto "Aiman-Sholpan" by the Kazakh writer Muchtar Äuesow as a spoken piece. That day is now seen as the founding of the Abai Opera House.

In 1935 an opera was performed for the first time in the opera house. It was the work of Carmen by the French composer Georges Bizet . Three years after the performance of Carmen, the performance of Swan Lake was the first ballet to be performed at the theater. Since 1937 the theater was called the Kazakh Opera and Ballet Theater.

In 1941 the theater was honored with an honorary title as academic theater. In the same year, the first performance took place in the new building on November 7th. On the 100th birthday of Abai Qunanbajuly in 1945 the theater was named after him.

building

The striking building of the opera was built between 1936 and 1941 in the neoclassic style. During the construction period, the designs were changed several times and the facade of the building was based on the appearance of the Alexandrinsky Theater in Saint Petersburg . The three-storey rectangular building includes a hall with 793 seats. The facade is clad with yellow plaster, the ornaments set themselves apart from it by their white coloring. The central element of the facade is the portico above the entrance. The side facades are decorated with pilasters that separate the narrow windows on the upper floors.
