Muchtar Äuesow

Muchtar Omarchanuly Äuesow ( Kazakh Мұхтар Омарханұлы Әуезов ; Russian Мухтар Омарханович Ауэзов ; born September 16 . Jul / 28 September 1897 greg. Oblast Semipalatinsk, Russian Empire ; † 27. June 1961 in Moscow ) was a Kazakh writer .

Life

Äuesow was born into a nomad family in the Semipalatinsk Oblast in the Russian Empire, near present-day Semei . His grandfather taught him to read and write. From a young age, Äuesow grew up under the influence of the works of the Kazakh writer Abai . His father died in 1900, his mother finally two years later, making Äuesow an orphan at the age of 15. He was then raised by his uncle and grandparents.

He first attended a village school and from 1906 a madrasa in Semipalatinsk. After only a year he was sent to the Russian School in Semipalatinsk. After graduating from school, he first studied at the Semei Pedagogical Institute and then moved to the Philological Faculty of the Leningrad State University in 1923 . At that time he was engaged in Russian literature and other foreign classics. He himself began writing short stories, poems and articles that were published while still a student. First he was known for his plays. His first play was Enlik-Kebek , a story about two lovers. He wrote the play on the occasion of Abai's granddaughter's wedding. He himself married 15-year-old Raichan in the summer of 1917, with whom he had a daughter the following year. His son was born a year later, but he died in childhood. The marriage was divorced in 1920.

When the Communist Bolsheviks came to power in Semipalatinsk in 1919 , Äuesow also joined the party. As a young man he was employed in local management positions, for example he was chairman of the Executive Committee of Semipalatinsk and also secretary of the Kazakh Central Executive Committee. But soon afterwards he was expelled from the party on charges of nationalism. In 1928 he completed his studies in Leningrad and a little later earned a doctorate from the Central Asian University in Tashkent . In 1930 he was arrested and charged with participating in an opposition organization. He spent more than two years in prison and after his release he went to Almaty. There he occupied himself intensively with the works of Abai and published a collection of his poems in 1933; a scientific publication of the works of Abai was already in preparation. However, the NKVD was still trying to prevent him from his literary activities. The publication of his works was made more difficult and his already published books were removed from the libraries and shops. All of this led to his leaving his homeland for Moscow .

Only in 1941 did he return to Kazakhstan, where he now worked in various cultural institutions and published other works. In total he wrote more than 20 pieces, which often dealt with socialism in Kazakhstan. Later, Äuesow concentrated on writing novels. Two novels - Abai and The Way Abais - are about the Kazakh writer Abai Qunanbajuly and were the result of the last 20 years of his life. Weg Abais comprises four volumes and was published from 1942 to 1956. For the first two volumes, Äuesow received the State Prize of the USSR .

Äuesow also dealt with drawing and translating literature into Kazakh. So he translated The Auditor by Nikolai Gogol and The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare .

He died on June 27, 1961 during an operation in Moscow. He was buried in the central cemetery in Almaty. After his death, the government of the Kazakh SSR decided to keep the name of Äuesow alive. In August 1961, the Kazakh State Academic Drama Theater was named after him. The Institute of Literature and Arts at the Kazakh Academy of Sciences was named after him. In 1962 a museum house was set up in Almaty in his honor and in 1972 the new district of Äuesow was founded in Almaty .
