Eckhard Thiele
Eckhard Thiele (born February 24, 1944 in Garlipp ; † July 22, 2018 in Berlin ) was a German essayist and translator .
Life
Eckhard Thiele fell ill with polio at the age of 13 and has been dependent on a wheelchair ever since. From 1957 to 1959 he underwent rehabilitation in Janské Lázně , Czechoslovakia , where he learned Czech.
Thiele graduated from the distance learning course in Bohemian and Russian Studies at the University of Leipzig with a diploma in 1966. From then on, Thiele worked as a freelance translator, essayist, editor and critic. He has translated works from Russian , Polish , Czech and Slovak . In 1994 he did his doctorate at the TU Berlin on “Literature after Stalin's death. A comparison of Soviet literature and GDR literature ”.
Thiele worked for eight years as a research assistant at the Institute for Literary Studies at the TU Berlin. There he worked as editor and co-editor together with Hans Dieter Zimmermann (his doctoral supervisor ) the 33 volumes of the Czech Library .
Thiele was the author of numerous essays and more than 100 translations. In 1992 he received the Marburg Translation Prize , the Recognition Prize for the Book Prize for European Understanding, Leipzig 1994, and the Gratias Agit 2005 (Czech Republic). In 2007 he received the Premia Bohemica Prize (Czech Republic) and was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for his services to German-Czech understanding . In 2008 he was awarded the Magnesia Litera Prize (Czech Republic).
