Andreas Tretner

Andreas Tretner (born May 26, 1959 in Gera ) is a German literary translator .

Life

Andreas Tretner completed his translation studies at the University of Leipzig , which he graduated in 1981 with the degree of a qualified translator for Russian and Bulgarian . He then worked as a specialist translator for an industrial company in Jena and as a lecturer for Slavic literatures at Reclam Verlag in Leipzig . From 1985 he published translations of literary texts. Tretner now lives as a freelance translator in Berlin .

Andreas Tretner translates prose and poetry from Russian , Bulgarian and Czech into German . He is a member of the PEN Center Germany , the Association of German-Language Translators of Literary and Scientific Works and the Leipzig translators' association “ Die Fähre ”. In 1998 Tretner received the Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding , and in 2001 the Paul Celan Prize . For his translation of the novel Venushaar by Michail Schischkin he received the International Literature Prize of the Berlin House of World Cultures, endowed with 10,000 euros . In 2015 he received the Swiss Translator's Recognition Award, endowed with CHF 10,000, from the Swiss "Dialog Workshop Association" . With his translation of Angel Igov's historical novel “The Gentle” from Bulgarian, Tretner was nominated for the Leipzig Book Fair Prize in the translation category in 2020 and, together with the author, received an International Literature Prize from the House of World Cultures 2020 for his translation.

Tretner is a member of the Association of German-Language Translators of Literary and Scientific Works , VdÜ.
