Abala

Abala (other spelling Ab-Ala , also Shiket in the Ethiopian highlands ) is a city in northern Ethiopia . It lies on the edge of the Danakil Desert and belongs to the Afar region , but borders directly on the Tigray region . The place is at an altitude of 1465 m and had 10,301 inhabitants in 2007.

Abala is an important regional trading center for products from the Afar region and the main trading center for goats.

The city is located on the road connecting Mek'ele in the highlands of Abyssinia and the salt mining areas in Dallol as well as Lake Afrera and further the Afar capital Semera . With the expansion of the roads, it is expected that the traditional salt transport via camel caravans will be replaced by truck transports.
