Abandonia is an Internet platform for old computer games , mainly DOS games, which are no longer maintained by their authors - so-called abandonware . The site supports various languages, including a. German, too.

Abandonia is currently one of the most visited abandonware sites on the Internet and has already received various awards.

For every game recorded in Abandonia there are screenshots and a review. The reports are drawn up by the members, who belong to the most varied of nationalities, and then checked. In this way, all languages ​​should be maintained equally and high quality should be ensured. In addition to the games themselves, the site also offers a variety of emulators for download that allow the games to be played on newer operating systems.

There are still some extras, such as a music collection in which the music of old games can be played, and a "junk list" in which the copyright status of old games can be checked.

history

Abandonia was launched in 1999 by Croatian Kosta Krauth. At that time, Abandonia was still part of the Warez scene. a. Illegally offered games for download even though they were still sold by the rights holder. After a forum was also set up in 2003 , the site became more and more popular.

The site received a further boost after the addition of different languages ​​and regular updates with new articles. With the success, the number of members increased, meanwhile the site is regularly visited by several thousand members and a few dozen employees are looked after. Today only games are offered that are no longer sold commercially and whose copyright is not owned by a member of the Entertainment Software Association .

Organization and technology

The site is based on a community of fans of old DOS games and is organized by an editorial team. Users who want to add a game to the offer of the site must first check whether it is actually abandonware or whether the manufacturer still has license claims. If this criterion is met, the user can send the game together with evidence of its abandonware status to the editorial team of the site, who will check the information and, if necessary, add the game to the repertoire. The structure of the site consists of a news site managed by the editors, forums and the actual core of the site, the games. These can be found using a search function or via categories and then downloaded.

Abandonia Reloaded

Abandonia Reloaded (AR) is a sister project that is dedicated to the development and publication of freeware games. The project was started in summer 2005 by Kosta Krauth, Monica Schoenthaler, Maikel Kersbergen and Tom Henrik Aaberg.

Reviews, screenshots, interviews as well as links to the download pages and associated solutions (walkthrough) for the games are offered. The games are rated by the authors of the site as well as by visitors.
